One of the instructors at the school where I work, is a fan of my car. I know this, because every day, without fail, he parks his grampafied Cadillac (purchased from a real grandpa, with suitably low miles) next to me.
A while back, I asked him why he parks next to me, and he said, "oh that BMW is yours huh?" and that he really likes it. Then as a joke, all winter he parked next to my Jeep. Well, after I told him the Grand Cherokee with the Star Trek tow hitch cover was also mine. So of course, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and sure enough, dude parked next to me.

The green landau roof is pretty sweet though.

I like the green roof alot. It fits the overall car. It does look very grandpa style though.

He's a math and physics teacher. The car was purchased from a real live grandpa who hardly put any miles on it.

It started in the '60s and '70s as a means of recalling the coachbuilt cars of the '20s and '30s that sometimes had bodies made out of fabric stretched over a wood frame. When metal bodies came out, they still had a wood and fabric roof for a time, since engineers in the '30s believed an all metal structure would cause a drumming effect.
So, basically, an attempt to "class up" the look of modern cars by adding a styling cue from prewar coachbuilt luxury cars.

Suffice to say, that design has aged really well. It's drawn so well from Cadillac's heritage that it really never looked outdated.
